Released two-letter domain names by Sweden!

Swedish .se domain registry has provided a good example for other country code domain registrars. The Swedish registry has released the two-letter domain names within their country code domain .SE.

There are a number of additional names which will be auctioned by the Swedish registry this fall. Those will include two-letter names corresponding to national codes as well as the names of countries. According to the information posted on the registry’s website, there will soon be allowed for registration such addresses as no.se, tv.se, pr.se or thailand.se and spanien.se.

The list of blocked and claimed names for .se domain was developed in 2003 when registration of .se domain names became possible to applicants outside Sweden. It is expected that within the next three years, most of the names on the list will be available for registration. In the past, the registry freed numerical domains in 2006 and geographic names were released in 2008. So far, the domains were released on a first-come, first-served basis. This time, according to the procedures laid down in 2013, domain names will be auctioned off and the proceeds from the auction will be donated to a number of initiatives connected with the development of the Internet in Sweden.

The names that have been blocked for registration or proprietary .se domain names include the following categories:

- Combinations of digital format xxxxxx-xxxx

- Two typos, followed by two hyphens,

- National codes according to ISO 3166-1 alpha-2,

- Domain Test

- Second-level domain,

- The name of the scope of the Swedish law,

- Swedish names of countries.

The release of two character Portuguese domains!

Beginning 3 November 2014, two-character names will be available under the Portugal’s domain .PT. There will be available both types: letter-based and numerical domains.

Fifty-one (51) domain names will be allocated via auction, which Portuguese domain registry will organize in December. At the same time, there will still be a limitation for certain character combinations, including those corresponding to country codes used for others TLDs. The deregulation of DNS for .PT does not include the names consisting of one letter. The proposed rate for the registration of two-character names under the extension .PT is 100 euros plus taxes. The starting price at the domain auction will be € 499 plus taxes.

In retrospect, it seems that blocking two- and one-character domain names can prove profitable for the registry. Domain values increase year by year, and if the www extension is highly appreciated on the market, the registry may not only get high amount of proceeds from the auction of released names, but also set a high price for the renewal of new short names.

The .london domain available for general registration

.london domain was made available for general registration on September 9, recording over 12,000 domain registrations within the first 24 hours of its general availability, with a total number of registered domain names of over 35,000.

During the Landrush phase, there were 22,600 domain names registered under .xyz. Within 24 hours following the opening of the General Availability phase, there were 12,400 new domain names recorded.

The number was impressive but still fell short of the expectations. Even though this result is a record among new gTLDs, the predicted numbers stretched as far as 50,000 registrations. Comparatively, the .berlin domain recorded less than 32 thousand domain name registrations within the first day of its General Availability, but a number of free domain names were offered to the residents of the German capital during a promotional campaign.

On the other hand, the .club domain, leading the way among new gTLDs offered for a fee, had nearly 26,000 domain names registered within the first day following the start of its General Availability.

High expectations for .london were aroused by the prominent position of London and its sizable population of 10 million as well as the promotional efforts made by the registry of .london domain in the British capital.

100 thousand registrations under .CLUB domain!

The .club domain has been the first among new generic TLDs to achieve 100 thousand paid registrations. The total number of names under the new extension is now 2.1 million. The .XYZ domain scores highest with the more than 477 thousand domain registrations, followed by geo TLD .berlin with nearly 140 thousand domain names registered to date.

The marketing of the .club domain has been more transparent yet equally effective when compared to .xyz, given the number of paid registrations. .club has been the first among new gTLDs to benefit from the support of a celebrity – the promotion engaged a well-known rapper 50 Cent. In addition, the domain has been visible for several weeks on the home page of the world’s largest registrar. It seems clear that honest marketing practices bring positive results, although it is difficult to downplay the value of the extension itself.

The .club domain, in a very short time following its release for general registration, has become a leader among new generic TLDs with paid registrations. It may be too soon to talk about big profits, but considering the renewals of .club domains next year, a substantial return on this wide-reaching .club campaign can be expected.

New .xyz domain

Lots of people say that the new gTLD .xyz has enormous potential. The domain’s major advantage is the fact that it has no specific meaning. That exactly is what makes it so great. The domain consists of the last three letters of the Latin alphabet, which makes it an ideal global extension, free from the constraints of a particular language.

The .xyz domain is intended as an extension offering both flexibility in terms of possible applications and eye-catching, easy to remember internet address. This is the potential of this extension: it is memorable and recognizable, and at the same time definitive.

Even before the release of the domain name, the registry declared an ambitious goal: one million domain names registered within .xyz during the first year of its operation, and five million registrations over the period of three years. So far, the overall standing of the domain does not look bad. The .xyz extension is the first and only domain from a pool of new gTLDs that has reached 500,000 registered names. At the time of writing this, it has already exceeded that number!

According to ntldstats.com, currently there are more than 2 million new gTLD domain name registrations. Only three of them (.xyz, .Berlin and .Club) have more than 100,000 registrations, five extensions (.xyz, .Berlin, .Club,.Guru and .Wang) have more than 50,000 registrations

Concerns around ICANN’s approval of new gTLDs

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers‘s (ICANN) rolling out of 20 new top-level domains every week starting this fall spells trouble to some.

Despite ICANN’s assurances that the expansion of gTLDs will create new opportunities for entrepreneurs, regulators as well as industry experts have been warning against it pointing out increased possibility of illegal use of domain names including fraud, trademark infringement as well as all sort of scams.

ICANN has committed to address the issue of violations by establishing a global trade-mark clearing-house that will deal with reported cases of abuse as well as making sure domain name registrants will follow ethical rules as outlined in contracts.

The expansion of domain name suffixes has been designed with the non-English speaking countries in mind to help the Internet be global and more usable resource. Domain names in national script will increase the scope of communication locally but sceptics doubt it will increase help international contacts. For example, Arabic users might feel reluctant to send out emails ending with an Arabic suffix. Furthermore, the online content will be harder to navigate causing confusion among users, especially trying to find their brand.

To protect their trade-marks and brands, businesses are going to buy several variations of their domain name in order to shield themselves from possible abuse. But with so many combinations at hand including misspellings and typo-squats the task can be very costly. Small businesses in particular will be facing challenges as they do not allocate as much preventive measures against fraud and legal counselling as big corporations.

Within a year and half it is expected that 1,400 new gTLDs will be introduced to the online community within various categories (industry, geography, ethnicity, etc.).

Snatching expiring domain names

Domain names, like real estate, are nowadays valuable possessions. Some of them being the envy of millions. In contrast to regular domain name registration process, acquiring an expiring domain name involves a different approach.

A domain name expiry date is not always what it seems to be according to a domain registrar. And the domain does not become available for new registration at the time of its expiry. In reality, it goes through a 40-day grace period during which it can be reclaimed by the initial domain holder. During the grace period, visitors attempting to enter the expired website are redirected to the homepage of the domain’s registrar.

If the domain holder has not re-activated the expired domain within the grace period, the contact information in WHOIS registry is deleted and the domain in question enters the redemption period. During that time, the domain is not yet available for sale to other parties and the initial holder of the domain still has a chance to keep the domain for a fee payable to the registrar. When the domain goes into the redemption stage, it can be expected that the domain holder is no longer interested in keeping the domain.

The next stage that the expiring domain goes through is the ‘locked’ phase lasting for about five days. If, during that time, the initial holder of the domain does not renew it, the domain officially expires and is removed from the ICANN domain database. It is then released and becomes available for purchase to anyone.

It is close to impossible to track and snatch the expired domains of choice and some domainers choose the option of placing a back order with domain registrars. This method, however, does not guarantee a successful purchase of the domain you want.

To maximise their chances, some domainers turn to companies specialising in snatching domains. They focus on the 3-hour drop period of expired domains during which domains are being deleted from the database and released into the domain ecosystem. Attempts at registering the domain manually during the drop period seems useless when competing with power servers of the domain snatching companies such as SnapNames.com, NameJet.com, Enom.com or Pool.com.

Each of the above companies functions in a different way, but generally the domain applicant registers with the company, provides credit card information and agrees to pay a fee (approximately $20.00) plus the amount of the winning bid upon the availability of the expired name. The fee is waived if the domain applicant does not receive rights to the domain.
